Daegwallyeong Sheep Ranch (한국의 알프스 풍경 대관령 양떼 목장) in the Heart of Korean Alps

Korea may be known for it's beautiful mountains, but there's  one thing I didn't expect to see on Korean mountains, a herd of sheep. Yes, you read it right. Korea has a famous sheep ranch located in 483-32 Daegwallyeongmaru-gil, Daegwallyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province (강원도 평창군 대관령면 대관령마루길 483-32). It is called the Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm (대관령 양떼 목장). It is a privately owned 195 sq. km sheep farm.

This past weekend, while other foreigners were busy visiting Buddhist temples around the country because it was Buddha's birthday, my husband and I were on a trip with a Korean tour group in Gangwon Provice. As a part of the tour, we visited the Daegwallyeong Sheep Ranch.

When I got off the bus, I was very excited. I've seen some wild goats when we visited Uido Island last year, but I've never seen a herd of sheep grazing on the mountain.

From the parking lot, we walked a little bit until we reached the ticket booth. Our tour guide paid for our tickets. Then we started walking up the hill again. After a few minutes, I started seeing some white little things on the top of the verdant hill.

Upon seeing the sheep, I ran with so much excitement, ignoring the dust coming from the dirt road. Though I was expecting to see sheep that are as white as snow, I was pretty amazed by the beauty of those brownish little lambs. I'm not sure if it was the heat that made the sheep so friendly that they allowed people to pet them or they're just used to seeing people around them. I didn't touch any of them, but I enjoyed watching Koreans petting and taking selfies with the sheep.

The farm showcased not only sheep but also the beautiful view of the nearby Taebaek mountain ranges. I felt like I was looking at a huge painting. The blend of the grass and tress, the blue sky, and the light gray silhouette of the mountains from afar was really beautiful. The spirit of a nature lover inside me was awakened once again.

The wind that touched me and blew my hair was so fresh.  I stood under a pine tree, closed my eyes, and just enjoyed the feeling of freshness.

We followed the walkway that goes around the  farm. Then we saw a little wooden shack on the other side of the farm. We learned from our tour guide that the shack was used as a backdrop for the movie " The man from Mars". Since it adds beauty to the farm, the owner decided to keep the shack even after the filming of the movie was finished.

Though our trip to the sheep farm was short, I know that I will always remember the beauty that I have found there. It will be hard to forget the scenery that looked like a "painting".

How it Started

It was summer of 1988 when a 37 year old man named Young-dae Jeon decided to build South Korea's first ever "Tourist Sheep Farm". He bravely left his high paying job and everything he had in Seoul  and moved to Daegwallyeong. Of course many people were against his decision. But he already made up his mind.

When he first moved to the countryside there wasn't electricity yet. He had to used candles at night. Starting his "Tourist Sheep Farm" was a great challenge. He needed to build a shed for the sheep. There was a lot of things that needed to be done. But the problem was, he didn't have any knowledge on how to do them. So what he did was, during his spare time, he worked at a construction company. There he started learning how to strike a hammer. Then, he learned how to pile blocks. He learned things one after another until he had all the skills he needed to start building his dream "Tourist Sheep Farm". He was able to build the sheds for the sheep and even a house for his family using the skills that he acquired.

He spent all his time cultivating the sheep farm. Fifteen years had passed quickly and he didn't even realize it. After all that hard work, he started seeing the "Tourist Sheep Farm" that he painted in his mind a long time ago. Two to three more years had passed.  By word of mouth that the farm was so beautiful spread like wildfire and many people started coming to see it. When that happened, he felt really happy. He felt like all his hard work and the time spent creating his dream had finally paid off. (This story was based on the message of the founder himself that can be found here.)

The original name of the sheep farm was Pungjeon Ranch (풍전 목장), but after a movie was filmed here, it was changed to Daegwallyeong Sheep Farm (대관령 양떼 목장) in 2000.

Ulsan Grand Park Rose Festival 2015

I consider roses as my first LOVE. I started loving roses when I was learning to walk. My Mom used to have a small flower garden in our back yard. She had different flowering plants in her garden but my favorite one was her peach colored African rose. I love its huge candy looking flowers. The first time I set my eyes on those beautiful petals, I know roses were going to be my favorite flower. It is my favorite flower until now.

While surfing the internet a couple of weeks ago, I saw an article about the Rose Festival at Ulsan Grand Park on May 23rd ~ 31st. I wanted to see the roses, but I didn't want to go during the festival. So we decided to go to Ulsan Grand Park a week before the festival.

We took a KTX train from Dongdaegu to Ulsan station. We stopped by Tongdosa Temple and took a taxi to the park. We didn't know that the festival ground is near the South Gate so we had to walk from the Main Gate all the way to the South Gate.

Though we came earlier, some roses were blooming already. I was really happy to see them. I couldn't stop myself from admiring their beauty. I couldn't stop snapping pictures of them. That explains the numerous photos below.

Roses! Roses! Roses everywhere! They came in various sizes and colors.

This one reminded me of my Mom's African roses.

Onnuri Gift Certificates (온누리 상품권)

Last Sunday, I received three Onnuri gift certificates from our church deacon. I didn't really know what they were for, but I accepted them anyway. Our church deacon said that I can use them to buy stuff from the traditional markets all over South Korea.

These are the gift certificates I received.

I put the certificates in my wallet, and I forgot about them until I passed by Gumi Central Market today. While I was walking, a banner hanging on the ceiling of the market caught my attention. It says, " You can use Onnuri gift certificates just like cash here in our market!" (우리 시장에서는 온누리상품권을 현금처럼 사용 하실 수 있습니다!)

Upon seeing the banner, I remembered the certificates I received from our deacon.

What are Onnuri Gift Certificates?

As you noticed, many grocery stores are sprouting like mushrooms all over the country. This situation affects the traditional markets in the country. In order to revitalize the traditional markets and help protect local economies, Onnuri gift certificates were created. These gift certificates can be used like cash when buying stuff in  traditional markets and other affiliated stores in the country.

How to use the Onnuri Gift Certificates?

The gift certificates come in 5,000 won and 10,000 won denominations. They can't be exchanged for cash. However, if you buy something and the remaining amount  is more than 60% of the value of the gift certificate, the vendor will pay it out to you in cash. The validity of the gift certificate is five years from the date of issuance.

The top one is a 10,000 won bill and the one below  is a gift certificate worth  10,000 won.

Where to purchase Onnuri Gift Certificates?

These gift certificates are available at all post offices all over the country and banks such as Community Credit Bank (새마을 금고), Shinhyeop Bank (신협은행), Woori Bank (우리 은행), Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK기업은행), Jeonuk Bank (JB 전북은행), Daegu Bank (DGB대구은행), Kwangju Bank (KJB광주은행), Busan Bank (BS부산은행), Gyeongnam Bank (경남은행), and National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NH농협은행).

UPDATE...

Today, I went back to Gumi Central Market to try buying fruit using the Onnuri Gift Certificates I have.

I walked around looking for fruit I want to buy. Then, I saw cherries and mangoes. They looked good. I walked toward the fruit stand. The woman came out. I talked to her in Korea. " 아주머니 제가 온누리 상품권을 잇는데 여기서 사용 하실 수 있어요?" ("Auntie, I have some Onnuri gift certificates. Can I use them here?") She replied smiling, "그럼" ("Of course, you can.")

As soon as I heard her response, I smiled and started telling her what I want to buy.  I bought some cherries, a mango, and and some oranges. I paid her using two Onnuri gift certificates worth 10,000 won each. I left the fruit stand smiling.

Simple experiences like this one make me happy.

A Day Trip to The Garden of Morning Calm and Edelweis Swiss Theme Park

I have always love flowers since I was a little girl. They make me fall in love everyday. I think that is one of the reasons why I love spring so much.  Having flowers around me makes me feel like I am enchanted by fairies. Seeing them gives me joy, and even when I am sick, I feel healthy.

Last year, I saw a picture taken at The Garden of Morning Calm. I found the picture so beautiful. I really wanted to go there, but it was a little late when I saw the picture. Spring was almost over. This year my wish was granted. We were able to book a trip with a Korean tour agency. I was very happy. I couldn't wait to see the flowers and the beautiful landscape. The place was far from where we live. It took us more then 5 hours to get there. But for me, it was all worth it. The place was really beautiful. It looked like a paradise. There were various kinds of flowers everywhere.

Though photographs can't justify the real beauty we have seen, I would like to share some of the photographs I have taken.

This one is my favorite. It is located near the entrance.

Daffodils/ Narcissus Garden

The Garden of Morning Calm was  conceptualized by Professor Han Sang-kyung. It was opened in May, 1996. It is the oldest private garden in Korea.
